Echo Lake
Timothy Ferris
Between two mountains of hollow height,
By rope swings, cliffs, and lofty trees,
We played in spring's obliging breeze
In the water, Echo Lake.
Once I went there alone
To bathe away the toilsome day's stains,
To be freshened by lapping lulls
And the deep vibrating secret sway
That Echo Lake makes.
The lake was deeply pressed with green that day,
Swirling with blue songs like the sky.
Because of the hollow heights about
Words echoed throughout,
Though only one Word each time.
Once I went there alone
And swam to the middle.
With chilly waves splashing my face,
My body numb in the water's embrace,
The sun beating down,
And that infinite flow without origin or termination
Pricking me like blood,
I wanted to dive deep into His wounds
And drown in the blood of His mercy.
